Is Frameless Shower Glass Easy to Break?

15/Sep/2025

Frameless shower screens are popular across New Zealand for a clean, modern look that opens up the bathroom. A common concern is whether the glass is fragile without a frame. The short answer: when you use properly specified glass and a professional install, it’s built to handle daily life.

How frameless shower glass is made

Most quality shower units use 10–12 mm toughened (tempered) glass. During manufacturing, the glass is heated and rapidly cooled to increase strength to around four to five times that of ordinary glass. Some projects opt for laminated or toughened-laminated panels where retention (the glass staying in place if cracked) is important.

  • Toughened glass: high impact resistance; if failure occurs, it crumbles into small blunt particles rather than sharp shards.

  • Laminated glass: multiple layers bonded with an interlayer; if cracked, the panel holds together instead of falling away.

Is it really safe?

Yes—provided the system is specified and installed correctly. That means compliant glass, quality hardware, and correct fixing points. A professional installation prevents point-loading or uneven pressure that can stress a panel over time.

  • Gate and hinge quality matters in wet areas too. We use hardware systems on our glass gate system range that are built for repeated use and smooth operation.

When can problems happen?

Even strong glass can be compromised by avoidable issues:

  • Edge impacts: the most vulnerable area of any glass panel is the edge or corner.

  • Incorrect installation: misaligned fixings or poor waterproofing can create stress points.

  • Damaged or low-quality hardware: worn hinges or brackets may transfer uneven loads.

  • Existing chips or cracks: any visible damage should be assessed and remedied promptly.

Care and cleaning

  • Wipe down with a soft cloth and mild cleaner; avoid abrasives and sharp tools.

  • Check hinges and support brackets occasionally to keep them tight and true.

  • Consider a glass coating solution if you want easier cleaning and less spotting.

FAQ

Will frameless shower glass shatter easily?
No. 10–12 mm toughened panels are engineered to withstand everyday impacts when fitted correctly.

If it breaks, is it dangerous?
Toughened glass is designed to crumble into small blunt pieces. Laminated and toughened-laminated options add retention if that’s a priority.

Can I DIY the installation?
We don’t recommend it. Waterproofing details, correct fixings and level alignment are critical. Use a professional installer.

What thickness should I choose?
Most frameless showers use 10–12 mm. We’ll recommend a spec based on layout, openings and hardware.
