Most quality shower units use 10–12 mm toughened (tempered) glass. During manufacturing, the glass is heated and rapidly cooled to increase strength to around four to five times that of ordinary glass. Some projects opt for laminated or toughened-laminated panels where retention (the glass staying in place if cracked) is important.
Toughened glass: high impact resistance; if failure occurs, it crumbles into small blunt particles rather than sharp shards.
Laminated glass: multiple layers bonded with an interlayer; if cracked, the panel holds together instead of falling away.
Yes—provided the system is specified and installed correctly. That means compliant glass, quality hardware, and correct fixing points. A professional installation prevents point-loading or uneven pressure that can stress a panel over time.

Even strong glass can be compromised by avoidable issues:

Existing chips or cracks: any visible damage should be assessed and remedied promptly.
